The short answer
At the prices checked, a two-cartridge annual budget for Aquasana AQ-MF-1-R is $183.98 at its published MSRP, or $156.38 using its listed Water for Life price. A one-cartridge annual Waterdrop RF10 budget is $30.99. These are different products with different claims; lower replacement spending does not establish equal treatment performance.

What this five-year budget actually counts
This is a budget for five recurring maintenance years, not the number of refills purchased from the day a new system arrives. It deliberately reserves money for ten six-month cartridges or five annual cartridges. A new kit that includes the first cartridge can require fewer purchases within an exactly defined five-year window.
Do not silently switch between those two methods when comparing a quote. Write either “maintenance reserve” or “cash purchases from installation date” at the top of your worksheet. Then use the same starting point and end date for every option.
Aquasana: the recurring price matters more than the opening offer
Aquasana’s published April 2026 schedule lists AQ-MF-1-R at $91.99 MSRP and $78.19 for Water for Life. Its replacement instructions specify six months or 784 gallons. Reaching the capacity first can mean replacing sooner, so two per year is a time-based budget, not a guaranteed maximum.
The arithmetic is straightforward: $91.99 × 2 × 5 = $919.90. At the listed membership price, $78.19 × 2 × 5 = $781.90. The $138 difference is conditional on that discounted price applying throughout the scenario. Do not budget a future discount as a contractual guarantee.
Waterdrop: use the matching cartridge and a stated interval
The RF10/15/17 page lists $30.99 for a one-time purchase of the 10UA replacement selection and offers a 12-month delivery option. Our RF10 scenario uses one replacement per year: $30.99 × 5 = $154.95. This is a budgeting assumption to confirm against the exact supplied model’s instructions and your use—not permission to ignore an earlier replacement trigger.
Do not substitute the price of another size or the UF version. A product-family page can present several cartridges and delivery choices at once. Save the selection and the matching system model before recording the price. We exclude autoship discounts from this row.
A cheaper cartridge is not proof of a better buy
The useful question is not “Which refill costs less?” It is “What does it cost to maintain a system that addresses my actual goal?” These two rows illustrate different upkeep commitments. They are not a declaration that the products deliver equivalent treatment.
Before using the price gap to choose a system, compare the relevant certified reduction claims, installation fit and acceptable everyday use. If a cheaper option does not meet the identified need, its low running cost does not make it a substitute.
Build a quote that includes the costs this table leaves out
Copy the following headings into a note or spreadsheet. Ask for missing figures rather than borrowing a national average that may not describe your kitchen. Keep one-time installation items separate from repeat purchases so you can see what changes next year.
| Budget line | Your input | How to handle uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| System and installation | Equipment + local installation quote | List additional plumbing separately |
| Consumables | Exact part × quantity due | Use the earlier applicable replacement trigger |
| Shipping and tax | Actual destination and order size | Do not assume a small refill ships free |
| Service visits | Quoted frequency and scope | Exclude DIY savings unless realistic for you |
| Five-year reserve | Sum the same period for each system | State whether the initial cartridge is included |
Before ordering a replacement
Match the model on the installed system to the manufacturer’s replacement reference. If you inherited the equipment and the label is missing, send a photograph to the manufacturer before opening a similar-looking cartridge. Shape alone is not a compatibility check.
Our recommendation is to choose the suitable system first, then make its maintenance cost visible. Keep the price source with your records and recheck it before each order. This avoids both an unexpectedly expensive subscription and a cheap replacement that does not belong in the system.
