Our recommendation
A useful Shell quote should identify the exact water problem, every model and media quantity, the performance document for each treatment claim, service and backwash flow, pressure loss, programmed softener settings, complete installation scope and five-year consumables. If those details are missing, the quote is not ready to compare.
| If this sounds like you | Best next move | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| You have only a package name and total | Request an itemized revision | A bundle name does not reveal the treatment train. |
| The recommendation came from bathroom count alone | Add test results and demand | Chemistry and peak flow size different parts. |
| You are comparing two installers | Use the same checklist for both | Make exclusions and service visible. |

1–3: Define the water problem
Attach the utility report or current laboratory result. State the problem in one sentence and mark which uses are affected. Separate hardness, disinfectant taste, iron, odor, sediment and health-related contaminants.
- 1. Source and dated water report
- 2. Measured result or clearly defined preference
- 3. Treatment outcome for whole-house and drinking water
4–6: Identify every component
Ask Shell or the installer to list model, size, media quantity and valve for every stage. Include prefilters, postfilters, UV, RO, leak shutoff, bypasses and accessories.
- 4. Exact SKU and tank dimensions
- 5. Media type and quantity in each tank
- 6. Valve, control, cartridge and accessory part numbers
7–9: Connect claims to evidence
Each important claim should point to a current certificate or test report. General brand pages and standard logos are not enough. Ask whether the document covers the complete system or one component.
- 7. Exact contaminant or hardness claim
- 8. Certification listing or test protocol
- 9. Rated flow, capacity and endpoint for that claim
10–12: Prove the hydraulic fit
Whole-house systems must serve the busiest realistic fixture combination without unacceptable pressure loss. Backwashing or regeneration also needs a suitable water supply and drain.
- 10. Expected peak service flow and pressure loss
- 11. Required backwash or regeneration flow and duration
- 12. Connection size, operating pressure and bypass arrangement
13–15: Define installation
The quote should say who provides plumbing, drain, air gap, electrical outlet, permits, startup and testing. Include freight handling and removal of existing equipment.
- 13. Labor, materials, permits and exclusions
- 14. Drain, power, floor space and freeze protection
- 15. Startup settings, commissioning tests and owner handover
16–18: Price ownership, not checkout
Ask for the consumables and service events expected across five years. Record salt pounds, cartridges, media, UV lamps and valve service. Then clarify warranty and return limits for an installed or custom system.
- 16. Five-year salt, cartridge, media and service estimate
- 17. Written warranty and installer workmanship coverage
- 18. Return, cancellation, freight damage and custom-order terms
A comparison table to reuse
Give every bidder the same water report and request the same fields. “Included” is not enough; list the exact part.
| Quote field | Proposal A | Proposal B |
|---|---|---|
| Exact treatment stages | Models and media | Models and media |
| Verified treatment claims | Document and rated conditions | Document and rated conditions |
| Service / backwash flow | GPM and pressure loss | GPM and pressure loss |
| Installed total | Included and excluded work | Included and excluded work |
| Five-year ownership | Consumables and service | Consumables and service |
Red flags
Pause when the treatment is recommended without a current result, when every concern is said to fit one tank without limits, or when the seller cannot state backwash and pressure requirements.
Also pause when a dramatic discount is used to hurry a custom, freight-heavy purchase. Installed water equipment can be expensive to return even when a policy looks generous.
Shell Whole-House Water System Quote Checklist: the bottom line
The checklist turns a sales conversation into a property-specific specification. It also makes it easier to compare Shell with Radiant Life, SpringWell, Aquasana or a local dealer without treating unlike systems as equivalents.
