A complete sump-pump quote should state the observed problem, exact primary and backup models, performance at the installed head, basin and float fit, discharge and check-valve work, electrical scope, alarm behavior, commissioning test, warranty and exclusions. Do not compare horsepower or maximum GPM alone.

Document the current system
Photograph the basin, lid, pumps, floats, check valves, discharge route, outlet and high-water marks from a safe, dry area. Record when the pump runs and whether the issue is power, mechanical failure, overwhelming inflow or water that never reaches the basin.
Keep out of standing water near electrical equipment. Active flooding or sewage requires appropriate emergency help.
Ask for the hydraulic calculation
The installer should identify vertical lift, pipe size, horizontal run, fittings and discharge back pressure, then show the proposed pump’s output at that head. A maximum GPM printed on a box is not the installed flow.
Ask how basin inflow was assessed and what margin the proposal uses. If there is no reliable inflow estimate, the uncertainty should be explicit.
Specify basin and switch fit
Confirm basin diameter and depth, pump footprint, switch travel and the water levels for primary and backup activation. Crowded floats can interfere with each other or the wall.
The quote should identify the lid, penetrations and service access. A neat installation must still allow testing and replacement.
Compare discharge scope
List new or reused pipe, check valves, unions, exterior termination, freeze protection and any separate backup discharge. Confirm whether local rules allow the destination.
A pump cannot deliver its rated curve if the discharge is restricted or frozen. Ask how the installer checked the whole path.
Add backup and alarms deliberately
Choose battery, water-powered or generator-supported backup from the property conditions. Record the battery model, charger, controller, water-pressure requirement, backflow protection and alarm channels.
Ask what the system does when power, internet, a float or a pump fails. Keep a local audible high-water alarm even when remote alerts are offered, when the design supports it.
Electrical and commissioning
The quote should cover the correct receptacle and circuit arrangement, code-required protection, cord routing and any electrician work. Follow manufacturer and local requirements.
Commissioning should safely test primary activation, backup activation, alarms, check valves and leaks using the supported procedure. Request the measured result and settings in the handover.

Red flags
Pause when a quote is based only on horsepower, when the backup is described in days without conditions, or when no one checks the discharge path and float clearance.
A proposal that ignores water entering outside the basin is also incomplete. Pumping and waterproofing are related but different jobs.
