Moen Flo can be worth considering for a frequently empty or high-value home when a plumber confirms compatibility and the household wants flow monitoring plus automatic shutoff. It is harder to justify when installation is difficult, outages are common or simple point sensors cover the main risks.

Our verdict
Flo is a serious plumbing installation rather than a plug-in gadget. Its value comes from monitoring flow and pressure patterns, alerting the household and being able to close the domestic supply under supported conditions. That can be compelling when nobody is present to respond.
We have not installed or performance-tested Flo. We reviewed current Moen product and installation information and judge it as a system: device, plumber work, power, network, settings and response plan.
Installation decides whether the product fits
Moen sells size-specific models and requires placement on the cold-water supply in a supported arrangement. Current documentation calls for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, a smartphone and continuous nearby AC power; exact distances and accessories depend on the model and installation.

What works without paying monthly
Moen currently describes the core app, alerts, monitoring and remote control as available without a required subscription. Optional FloProtect offerings can add benefits such as extended warranty or deductible coverage under their terms.
Treat optional coverage as a separate purchase decision. Verify eligibility, exclusions, term, cancellation effect and current price; do not assume it replaces homeowners insurance.
Power and internet are separate failure cases
Ask what happens during loss of internet while power remains, and what happens during a power outage. Remote notification cannot be assumed in either case. Moen sells a battery-backup accessory with a published limited runtime, which should be compared with the outages typical at the property.
Include router backup only if it is part of a deliberate plan. A powered valve without internet and a connected router without valve power are different states.
What Flo does not cover
A valve on the domestic supply does not stop rain, groundwater, sewer backup or water stored downstream. It can also miss risks outside the controlled branch. Ask the plumber to mark controlled and uncontrolled water sources.
Point sensors may still add value near a water heater, washing machine or sump area because they detect water at a location rather than infer it from whole-line flow.
Calculate the complete first-year cost
Add the device, fittings, plumber labor, electrical work, Wi-Fi improvement, optional battery backup and any paid plan you actually choose. Ask who handles warranty labor and what happens if a replacement device requires another plumbing visit.

Bottom line
Flo is worth a qualified quote when automatic action against supply-line leaks is valuable enough to justify a permanent installation. It is not a substitute for fixing known plumbing faults or planning for non-supply water.
